I dunno about the rest of you, but if I don't shower first shaving is very painful. Don't do what these guys did.

Yo. Black Kings, here's my extra tips for you:

        1) Use a hot towel to soften the hairs and open the pore as the first step. 2-3 minutes is enough. Otherwise, shave after a hot shower.

        2) Pull the skin tight and shave in the direction of the hair growth, or across the grain (never against the grain).

        3) Cut in short straight strokes. If you twist the razor, or try to cut around curves, you can cut yourself.

        4) Keep that razor clean. Rinse it regularly.

        5) Do the 2 stage shave. Stage 1 is a quick pass to take out the bulk. It's not supposed to be perfect. Rinse your face. Identify the areas you missed. Stage 2 gets the remaining hairs. Try to not pass over your face more than twice, can lead to razor burn.

        6) try to use clear oils or gels instead of foaming cream. It helps you see where to cut and how the skin is doing underneath.

        7) Close them pores back up with a cold splash.

        8) Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize. Our hair is thick. We gotta feed it with beard oils, or it's gonna let your skin know it's angry.

        9) Enjoy it. Never shave in a rush. It's YOU time. Give yourself 15-30 mins to do this properly.

        Peace out Kings

loved the video, more kids need to learn traditional shaving. nothing's closer or as refreshing as a good wet shave. that being said, i'm going to revise your tips a bit for other people, not very thing works the same for everyone though you did set a very good baseline.

          1) if you care about your grooming enough, you're already showering daily. truth be told, the shave's close enough you can get away with shaving every other day.

          2) traditionally, you want to cut with the grain, across the grain and then against the grain. if you have a problem with ingrown hairs, skip step three, then two until you find what works for you. everyone's skin and hair is different, there's no hard and set rules here.

          3) length of the stroke is a matter of personal preference. keep the blade straight and at a 30 degree angle and you'll be fine.

          4) definitely rinse the blade often. the longer you go between shaves, the more often it's going need to be rinsed.

          5) 2-3 passes is normal (to fit with the whole with the grain, across the grain, against the grain thing,) don't worry about it. feel free to add another layer of cream or shave soap between passes to avoid razor burn.

          6) i think he's referring to shaving cream/soap/oil here. i'm blind, so seeing isn't a big factor for me. i go by sound and feel and if i can do it you can too.

          7) for younger folk prone to breakouts this is solid. for older folk like me, i use warm water to take in as much moisture as i can.

          8) moisturize, moisturize, moisturize is damn right, though beard oil is completely unneeded. it'll oil itself up plenty fast on it's own. what needs moisturizing the skin you''ve just shaved, so find yourself a good aftershave lotion.

          9) do take your time. this is the reason i started showering after work, so i could take my time shaving proper. the shave is so close i still look better than people that just ran there face over with a gillette the next morning.

          10) quick tips: there's going to be a lot of trial and error finding what works for you. i'll just say, if you're interested in wet shaving, i've seen some rather poor starter kits in the grocery. that should give you a basic taste but it's basically giving you a cheeseburger and telling you it's a prime rib. you'll need a simple stand from your brush and razor, they'll need to dry proper. for the brush, recommend silverback badger. for the razor, i'd recommend a sample pack from amazon to test what works with your skin/hair combo. as far as soap/cream/oil, you're going to have to figure that out, mind you, your water hardness is going to greatly affect how they lather. so the harder the water, the weaker the lather, may be a glycerin soap might do you better than a lanolin. for aftershave, i really like gilbert henry's, definitely recommend.

          11) thanks, danwell, for making me think about and appreciating shaving again instead of it being something i just do. look forward to hearing about any tips yall young folk've come up with that can help me step up my game. paz por reyes.

I didn’t get ANY of this. Lol. Primarily because I’ve been growing what would become my current beard since the first whiskers sprouted. My dad DID teach me how to shave my head, though. He’s been bald (by choice) for 15 years, I’ve been for about 7 (on and off about 10).

To be honest I find all the people going on about how they don't know how to shave insulting. I never had my father in my life and lost my grandfather before he could teach me. I never learned how to use a razor myself and have always used an electric. I get what their struggle is and applaud them for the fact they are doing this.
