I've been to 2 black owned and operated salons where the owners and technicians did not know how to care for natural hair. They stuck with old school techniques like perms, weaves and putting petroleum based products then using hot comb to maximize the heat. I handed the technician heat protectant before blow drying and heat styling and she looked confused. 🙄🙃. I asked the another tech to trim the ends of my hair in its natural 4c states and she made random snips here and there to it. Smh....We have so much more products, more knowledge and better techniques, and readily available YT videos, no excuse to be so clueless. Take a class or two. That's why I love my current stylist. She's always learning, and researching to stay abreast of styles and techniques. She even takes suggestions and asks questions. 😊

If the salon is a quality spot and is skilled, there would not be an extra charge

Yes i would get charged double the amount because i have very long very curly very thick hair maybe some places even triple the amount and to be honest i understood because the time it would take would be double or triple the time, so i didnt think it was Discriminating, and im not person of color so i dont think its a race thing i just think they think about amount of time and product.

As a hairstylist, the only thing I gotta say is time is money
If it takes 3 hours to do someone’s hair because it’s thicker and to penetrate the color it takes more product then yea it’s gunna be more money
B/c we work just like y’all do and
                  If I could’ve gotten 3 clients in
The tone frame for one ima charge more to make the difference up or we end up loosing money
Now i don’t care what ethnicity you are
I’m well educated in all hair types and textures
I just think maybe see it as a stylist
Cuz we got bills to pay too
But yea I agree you can’t be charging someone extra if they come in for a service just b/c your not educated on their hair texture like no that’s not cool
Educate yourself first and For most
Anyone who sits in your chair should feel well taken care of

Textured hair doesn’t require more products!!! It depends on how thick and long your hair is. If you have to use a lot of shampoo, conditioner, or spray to do black peoples hair, you’re not doing something right.

As a licensed cosmetologist yes I am going to charge extra. If you someone took me an hour to do vs someone that’s going to take me 3 hours plus why would I charge the same I’m losing out on money. Time is money. That’s like you doing over time and not going paid for it.

I don't think the salon is wrong. I remember going to the salon chain in Walmart and they told me the same thing about using the hairdryer. It cost more for energy to using it and my hair texture uses more of it a lot longer than other textures. I can understand that from a business standpoint. More use, time, the product usually costs more.

I think extra is fine if you tell that person up front because then they can decide to go somewhere else. I know, walking into a salon that my hairdresser will tell me it’ll be extra because I have fairly long and thick hair, but they will always tell me up front instead of me sitting in the chair or ready to leave and they’re tacking in extra fees

I'm a half Puerto Rican and half Dominican female with naturally curly, sometimes unruly hair. My hair soaks up conditioner like I been living in the dessert with no hydration for years at a time smh.

Anyways, I wanted my hair done so I went to this Dominican hair salon around the corner from my house one day. These ladies complained about everything, from women with long hair to kinky curls, etc...but one thing bothered the hell out of me. Every black girl that came into the salon and would ask for a blow out was immediately told they would also need a perm first. Their hair wasn't looked at, taken down or anything first. They were immediately dismissed back to their homes with more money for a perm they may/may not have needed. I found this extremely ignorant, considering my own hair resembled some of theirs'. Nobody said anything to the ladies who worked here though. And I was only 13. Needless to say, I told my mom I was never going back to that salon again.

I don't think them charging extra is a bad thing. But for them to call it "texture fee" makes it discriminatory. Just tell them the price and if they ask why, maybe it's high, then tell them that they use more products on your hair. And I mean this for like salons that aren't like necessarily for black hair.

It says it on my receipts. It's made me contemplate cutting my hair. So, I guess charging for extra product use I can understand. BUT, BUT, BUT this should be explained prior to the service and never described as a "texture fee". It's just like ordering more food and paying for the additional "products".

This is why I stop giving them my money cuz I knew it was completely unfair to charge me a hair texture I can’t control. Completely disgusting. Just go to black owned natural hair salons for expert professionals and fair prices 🗣👏🏾

Even if the hair dresser KNOWS how to do textured hair, it’s still more time consuming and they WILL add extra in the price ACTING like it’s the regular price. It’s textbook marketing. Of course they gonna charge more. I have NEVER been to a place where they didn’t. 🙄
