        That's it.
My first Cowboys jersey will be Meredith's #17.

Excuse me I have some dust in my eyes.

A little Dandy Don trivia: Each year during the Holidays Coca-Cola sponsored a basketball tournament in Dallas and High School teams from all over N.E. Texas would be invited to play. Dandy Don held the record for the most points scored by a single player in the history of that tournament.

It has been a few decades, so my memory will not be precise, but I remember one of the MNF games, Don was in the booth with Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford, and the home team Houston Oilers were losing badly. The stands had emptied to a considerable degree, and an ABC live shot camera kept zeroing in, over and over again, on an exasperated Houston fan surrounded by empty seats. He was so isolated that, even though the camera was far away and using a telephoto lens, he could tell each time the camera was focused on him. He finally got angry enough so that the next time ABC pointed the live camera at him, he gave the camera (and the TV audience) the finger. Howard and Frank couldn't think of an appropriate response, but Dandy Don Meridith said "That's right fans, we're number one".

Don was clever with words, especially when sharing the broadcast booth with all-too-serious Howard Cosell. Two sentences will forever be identified with Dandy Don: singing "Turn out the lights, the party's over" near the end of a hopeless loss (from a Willie Nelson song) and countering any improbable suggestion with "If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas." Don was a better wordsmith than QB. I rate his QB skills 3.5 out of 5; his English play skills 5 out of 5.

Don was a good QB, but many truly great Cowboy QBs followed him. I was in the Cotton Bowl crowd when Dallas was leading Cleveland 21-17 late in the fourth quarter. Dallas advanced to Cleveland's two yard line, first and goal. A pass play followed, intercepted in the end zone. I can't imagine such a play, with most-reliable Don Perkins at fullback. Four plays to get two yards, and a pass play was called??? Cleveland led by Jim Brown drove 80 yards for a touchdown and won the game. On a radio call-in show a couple of days later, Meredith was the guest. I called in to ask who called that idiotic play, Landry or him. "I called it and would call the same play again tomorrow." Obviously not the greatest QB mind of all time.

Dandy Don was the best color analyst in NFL history bringing the It to prim time television..
“It ain’t over til the fat lady sings “a story about two kids dragged to the opera .
The younger one turns to the older and painfully asks is it almost over ?The older one apparently a vet answered him with famous It ain’t over reply. Of course it means the team behind still has a shot.
As is this game is still in the hat.
Put out the lights of course has the opposite meaning.
His humor ,story telling , and unlike some his humility stole the broadcast .
He was a great QB also .
The HOF should find a spot somewhere .

I've always hated the sight of NFL quarterbacks wearing helmets with those ridiculous *single-bar* face masks. That was probably the primary reason why Don's nose was broke so many times.

Tom Landry was with Don Meredith a bit like Chuck Noll was with Bradshaw, but Meredith wasn't as "bendable" as Terry so Don left the game. If Don had been more like Bradshaw, Landry might have won a few more Super Bowls as Don had a good arm.

Adam's 8-year-old son, Wesley, insisted on being called "Don" after a few visits with the Meredith family. His real name is Wesley, but he goes by the nickname of Don to this day.
