Is Royal Purple better than Amsoil? Let's find out!

  • Is Royal Purple's full synthetic 5W-30 motor better than Amsoil's 100% synthetic 5W-30 motor oil? In this video both products go head to head in several tests. Both Amsoil and Royal Purple are very high quality synthetic motor oils. I bought both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amsoil or Royal Purple, and I do not sell Amsoil or Royal Purple products. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Not gonna read 15k comments to see if it's been said already, but... I'm a bit negative to the simple fact that RP seems* to color their oil. It looks used when new, AND it's a lot more difficult to see if there's unwanted particles in the oil. The Amsoil oil was still somewhat transparent even after the heat test.

    * I say "seems" since I've never seen the brand in a store here in Sweden.

Great test - thank you! Sure would be great if you could perform an Amsoil vs. Valvoline Full synthetic test. I can't find a proper comparison test like yours of those two oils anywhere.

That is not the Royal Purple HPS with the Synerlec additive. If it was, Amsoil would not have a chance!

Project Farm I really want to run AMSOIL but it does not claim to meet or exceed dexos2 only 1. I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze 2.0 diesel and want only the best oil. What are your thoughts?

Why did you use 2 different specifications of oil? It was a poor comparison. The amsoil specification is designed with lower viscosities and evaporation rates for light duty petrol, it's literally part of the specification requirement. The royal purple is primarily a diesel spec oil with higher viscosity. The specification limits of these 2 products MUST be different and the results reflected the requirements of each spec. Complete waste of time unless your going to test the same spec products together.

Should do a comparison between valvoline motorcraft and rotella 15w 40 non synthetic oils. This type of information is huge when it comes to injector failure in 6.0 powerstroke engines and itd be interesting to see why some big performance builders dislike rotella weather it's just their opinion or if theres actually to truth to it.

Seen a few videos in the past and really enjoyed them. I subscribed today based off this video because I've been hearing different things about these two oils. I've heard more negatives about RP than Amsoil. Besides Honda OEM oil, as a secondary, I'll be running Amsoil for sure. Just picked up an '11 Civic Si with the K20z3. It's a high revving engine so it needs the best protection. Keep up the great work and experiments! 👍🤘

I want a oil that sticks to parts for dry start ups . Dry start ups is were most wear comes from and royal purple is the winner in that department. Most of these tests don't tell me anything but are interesting and thanks for them..

@tjcoons450 I used to work for Asplundh tree company. We had 86 trucks in our region, they all had 496 ci.- 8.1 liter engines, We used Mobile 5000 10 W 30.
The company switched to Royal Purple, all 86 trucks / engines started using 2-3 quarts of oil per day. 27 engines locked down completely. Royal Purple ruined our engines.
Eventually, we replaced all 86 engines, it cost over 1.5 million dollars. None of the engines lasted over 3000 miles, when we started using Royal Purple.
We used the rest of the Royal Purple for chainsaw bar oil. The purple dye is a gimmick for dummies.
