The protester was shot as thousands of people demonstrated in defiance of a protest ban for the 70th anniversary of Communist rule in China. Though people have been shot by rubber bullets in previous protests, this is the first injury from a live round.

In the Chinese capital Beijing, 15,000 soldiers paraded with advanced military hardware to mark the anniversary.

Nearly four months of protests in Hong Kong have challenged Chinese President Xi Jinping's vision of national unity.

International editor Gabriel Gatehouse and cameraman Jack Garland report from Hong Kong. In the studio Emily Maitlis is joined by MP Bob Seely and Steve Tsang, director of the China institute at SOAS.

The only thing these rioters has achieved and shown to the China is that "one country, two systems" does not work. All this will come back in 2047 to haunt the Hong Kong youths of this generation....especially those who have been arrested (whether or not they are charged). Unlike many of their leaders who already have foreign nationality as fallback, all these brainwashed youths will not be as fortunate.

Hong Kong riot is never about freedom. It is all about advancing self-interest, nothing else. The benefactor is clear from the actions and rhetoric of the one Big Brother that is actively behind the violence.

It's rioters who turned violent first before police retaliating with equal or greater force. PEACEFUL protest, ZERO police action. PERIOD. See beyond the propaganda and biased media, the truth is police will only respond in kind when these protestors turn into violent rioters.

Hong Kong is a blessed place, the most free place, People are free to enter and exit, Funds are free to enter and exit,... Business can be freely traded, Renminbi, foreign currency can be freely circulated, What financial products are available, all can be freely traded, and what financial products are spurred by the enthusiasm of the dream is developed, the double exhibition is small, and the financial thugs are tempting. Hong Kong is a spy paradise, which is the great value of Hong Kong. Hong Kong's wealth is a financing center. Hong Kong is an interest group (black and white), and property hegemony has plundered huge wealth. Hong Kong's surplus value, everyone loves it, Hong Kong's status is rock solid, value is incomparable, what are you worried about? ? Nowadays, there is wine now drunk!

It all depends on your action, kid. So as you need to face the consequences, do not blame police or anyone of your death in the chicken fight way. From the first day you have joined, you are risking yourself to dangers, anything could happen and you need courage and be responsible of yourself. You guys always say fighting for democracy but how much did you know about democracy? Where is your senses of the real democracy? I respect your freedom in the name of democracy if you do respect others freedom to choose. I respect your democracy if you not using violence to take things above law. Zero tolerance to violence by any means.

He said that “they don’t have control on the police how he will get shot”, why not ask him “doesn’t he has control of his actions?”. You will not be shot if you protest peacefully.

The Police just act weak now cuz the protesters aren’t peaceful. They’re weak and cant fight unless they’re attacking peaceful demonstrators. During the umbrella revolution, a movement during 2013 or 2014, they beat peaceful protesters into a bloody mess. Protesters often got beat just for trying to move forward. And the same stuff happened on June 12th 2019, around the beginning of the protests, when HK Police attacked peaceful protesters and random people and sparked violent reactions from obviously angry demonstrators. Examples include them pepper spraying some guy with a blue jacket sitting down on the sidewalk, shooting a protester in the head with rubber bullets, attacking an unconscious protester, etc. Throughout July, there were organized mob attacks by gangsters hired by HK Police, undercover police pretending to be protesters by vandalizing and attacking other police, sexually harassing an arrested girl, shooting tear gas at an elementary school student, and much more. Peaceful protests don’t work if you’re fighting against a stubborn tyrant

Hong Kong needs independent, level-headed, impartial arbitrators, who have Hong Kong best interest in mind, to work out an amiable solution for the current crisis. They need to establish some common grounds where both sides could accept. Hong Kong long term prospective lies more with Beijing on what role the city would continue to play.

These sponsored thugs and rioters are suppressing the opposing voice of true Hong Kong population. No thanks to these sponsored thugs who appeared to be worse than Nazis and Red Guards. Hong Kong has been peaceful and orderly before these thugs showed up. It would help to return Hong Kong back to normality if these rioting could stop so that the authority could de-escalate their actions. It would also help if the media is less biased in their coverage. They should be covering the news and not making it.

As far as history and the future are concerned, HK has been, is and will always be part of China. The only things that HK should truly treasure are its enterprising people, unique culture, institutional system with the rule of law, and infrastructure. Without these core assets, the society will not survive regardless of political system.

Individual can always have a difference on opinion. However, press coverage must maintain its impartiality. If it is simply the view of the reporter, then it must not be disguised as news but rather his or her own opinion piece since the content is probably filtered to justify one side or the other. The current situation in Hong Kong is that these sponsored thugs have infiltrated the "press". Every tom-dick-and-harry can get a press pass for $30 as independent online "reporter". The international media would just ride on these opinion pieces as facts or sources for their reporting.

Just by having a British's Chinese Pedigree sitting in your interview doesn't make you look credible. And I 'like' the fact you still persist in using the word "authoritarian" in China. Yes, they are authoritarian, but not to their people but rather from influence like you BBC that distorts the truth. An authoritarian leadership will only lead to a North Korea country, not the current rich and influential status of current China. Don't waste time trying to teach China how to build a civilization. You should spend more time preparing for the coming Europe riots when the next world economy collapse comes as USA crisis slowly unveiled itself in the coming 2020. I will sure enjoy seeing how you handle 'peaceful protests' on my sofa with the pop-corn.

Report the truth BBC News. This should be called "a riot" not a protest. A peaceful protest doesn't involve hooligans, thugs, and criminals vandalizing properties, assaulting others of opposing views, and assaulting police officers. Failure to report facts and supporting the narrative of unlawful people is just enabling them to commit more crimes. These HK people are criminals, thugs, and hooligans. All the assaults and destruction they've committed in the last 3 months are acts of criminals. Why is BBC News biased in your reporting? These low class HK people are using the so-called "freedom & democracy" narrative to freely commit violence, vandalism, and crimes. Please do westerners a favour and report the truth. The Western media (BBC News, Global News, CTV News, and CBC News owes the Western public accountability in your reporting.

Not just them many rich businessmen also complained Beijing making "wrong choices" of senior government officials in HK which is the fundamental problem right now. Had Carrie Lam "withdrawn the bill" after 1st million people took to the streets on Jun 9 NOTHING would have happened but that bitch waited until Sep 4 before announcing withdrawal. From Jun 12 to Sep 4 thousands protesters are seriously injured, beaten up, raped tortured by police dogs with over 100 killed!!! This sort of police brutality never happened under British era. CCP has to review everything: HK is not China, HK cannot be ruled like China esp in regard to police brutality, human rights and inhumanity. Several US Congressmen are visiting HK to look into the mass slaughtering, torturing, kidnappint and rape committed by police dogs in the past months and US will put sanctions on Carrie Lam, the police chief and commie puppets. They should all go to jail to be tortured and raped in the jail just what they are now doing towards the protesters!!!
