Beyond the new races and the magic and tech i have always enjoyed the concept of the world, a word emerging from a vast conflict. I find the themes appealing and even topical. It is a setting where you can tell a very different kind of story with your games or stick to the classics with new toys for your players to enjoy.

honestly am curious how the progenitor dragons relate to the cosmos of dnd over all, best I could find via a google search is that they are some form of gods, but nothing else not even what status of lesser, greater, ect...

These settings (Eberron and Ravinica) are pretty pedestrian to be honest. When will you they do the truly interesting stuff like Planescape, Dark Sun and Spelljammer??

What becomes of the subraces of the warforged we can find in the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron? Should we not use them anymore? I personally love the Envoy :D.

So, am I the only one that hates the new changeling? Like I got my copy of RFTLW in today and the changeling got completely neutered and is so dull now. I can't say much for the warforged, because I've never played one, but the changeling really bums me out

It's funny when he says to look at the words, but Last War contains a lot of copy pasted information from Wayfinder's Guide.

WoTC somewhat jumped the gun on a lot of the changes of the races in my opinion. I mean, yes, the integrated protection for Warforged from the UA was stupidly broken and definitely needed fixing to where the current changes feel fair but they needlessly stripped out the subraces that sort of made Warforged unique and feel like they were indeed created with specialized purposes. Feels like they beat Warforged with the Nerf Hammer a few too many times to the point of being flat and bland. As for the Changelings, I don't think the removal of Unsettling Visage and Divergent Persona was needed and although you could argue they don't make sense, removing them all together and not replacing them with something else makes the race feel more empty and lacking features. Kalashtar definitely feel more balanced but the removal of the range limit of Mind Link didn't seem necessary. And don't get me started on Wildhunt Shifters. You pretty much made a subrace that Barbarians can now play to get free advantage on Reckless Attacks without the downsides. Granted, it's once per long rest but if you're pairing it with a Berserker Barbarian, you're pretty much getting 3 attacks at advantage with no downside when you decide to go all out.

Awhile back in a previous incarnation of Eberron my gaming group played a squad of warforged soldiers during the Last War belonging to a unit that came to be called the " Iron 8th ". We had a lot of fun slogging through the mud and conflict just trying to survive. Maybe now it is time to revisit our old characters and find out what those warforged veterans are doing with themselves. Maybe they can make a new life for themselves beyond the Last War, beyond the horror and the meager victories.

You killed Warforged. Congratulations. All you had to do was either nerf Integrated protection or get rid of it, but no!! You took Warforged(the unofficial sponsor of Eberron, to the point that ONE IS ON THE COVER) and watered them down to the point were they are barley recognisable. You killed Juggernaut and Skirmisher, you axed Integrated Tool, hell you even took away a +1 to stats, and gave us nothing in return exept for 1 tool proficiency and 1 language! The race feels so bland now! Shouldn't a race that was created to replace human soldiers on a battle field be at least as good as a human?

On Eberron, sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.

It’s one of my favorite worlds, as it shows you can do high fantasy with plenty of diversity without losing flavor. Forgotten Realms, on the other hand, tastes like you threw a seven-course meal into a blender.

I really miss Cerilia (Birthright) too.

I really liked Guildmasters Guide, thought it was one of the best 5e supplements, and am really looking forward to Eberron.

One piece of criticsm - it would have been great to advance the story a bit, so mayb it was set 7 years after the last war rather than 2. It would just give the setting a fresh wind and allow for a bit more progression, and you don't really lose anything about how the War is still important to the setting and to the characters.

Too late now, but just my two cents!

@Staffan Johansson I agree that generally you are correct, eg Dark sun, Dragonlance, The FR edition changes, but I think with Eberron it would have been different.

Advancing the storyline 5 years would have allowed for some new ideas, but not setting DEFINING changes. In the analagy of the 1st world war it would have gone from 1920 to 1925.

I just felt that having NOTHING change was a mistake. I've posted this on other forums but just wanted to post it here, but it's WotC's property they can do what they want!

@misomiso I've never seen a setting that was improved by metaplot advancing the timeline. It pretty much always wrecks the stuff that attracted me to the setting in the first place.

@Staffan Johansson I know it is, but i think it would have been good for the setting to move it on a bit imo, but it's just my opinion.

I strongly disagree. A big draw of the setting is that it has *just* come out of the Last War, and everything is still on the edge. It is a setting full of potential, and moving it forward necessitates *resolving* some of that potential, thus reducing its use for actual campaigns.

The closest real-world analogy I can think of is the "roaring 20s". The Last War is very similar to WW1, in that it was highly destructive, brought forth many new technologies, and didn't really have a conclusive ending. They even brought home the analogy by having the armistice treaty signed on the equivalent of November 11 in a lightning rail cart. So, the setting is highly dependent on this post-war era of prosperity and intrigue with the wounds of the war still fresh. Moving the timeline forward would change that - just like the stories you'd tell of a 30s Europe or America would be very different from the stories you'd tell about a 20s Europe or America.

The point of a published campaign setting is not for the designers to tell a story. It is to let DMs and players tell their own stories. Many published settings make this mistake, and I don't want to see that happen to Eberron.

You could continue this progression with letting players get epic boons during that lvl 20 adventure.

I am running an Eberron game right now where an ancient forge was turned on, deep in the swamps of Droaam. The party left it on and then caused hell all through Droaam to the border of Breland. Now there is a huge diplomatic crisis! Some want to take an army into Droaam. Some want to use diplomacy. I don't know what is going to happen, but it's getting very exciting! Remember, the Sisters want recognition as a nation, which the Treaty of Thronehold did not give them. It's going to be an interesting couple of Fridays over the coming weeks. Getting this book will only help assist me in running this already complex and great game. :)

Like WotC would have made a much bigger deal out of new subclasses if any were being released. From what has been said the 3 subclasses are for the artificer and that is it for this book. Like there is alot of other stuff anyway from new races, to dragonmarks and magic items like not every book needs new subclasses and with UA these would have needed a bigger gap between coming out and book release as they need to send a bit in advance the pages to the printers and alot of time needs to be spent as well as on content on layout and art. let's just be happy with what we have.

Eberron is in some ways close to Planescape, and in others sort of the anti-Planescape.

The similarities are mostly in Sharn vs Sigil. Both are vast cities with fantastic geography (the inside of a torus for Sigil, majestic towers for Sharn) populated by a wide variety of weird things and hubs for travel to all sorts of fantastic location (portals in Sigil, lightning train, seagoing ships, and airships for Sharn).

The difference is that Planescape is very much about philosophy and alignment, while that is specifically de-emphasized in Eberron. Planescape is also intimately connected to the classic Great Wheel cosmology, while Eberron is off doing its own planar thing, and with the focus being on how the planes interact with the material plane.

We need more Campaign setting books and fewer adventure campaign books. An actual Forgotten Realms setting book aside from Sword Coast would be great, for example. I love the 5E mechanics, but this is my biggest complaint about this version.

In my opinion they really wanted to revolve things around one campaign, because if everyone playing D&D has a general idea about the motivations and such they are less likely to end up confused and mess up there rp. But other settings should ideally exist for people who are experts at D&D lore and desire something new, But at that point most people homebrew anyway.

@dungeon delvers I haven't seen much in the way of balance, to be honest. The majority of books are adventures. I want more of the other stuff at this point. As someone that is more of a player, adventures don't interest me nearly as much as other kinds of books do. I want to buy books I can use and enjoy without running the risks of ruining an adventure.

They will never do a book called Player's Handbook 2 for 5e, because market research has shown that a not insignificant portion of newbies will look at the shelf of D&D stuff at their FLGS and go "Player's Handbook and Player's Handbook II... the second one has to be better, so I'll buy that." That's why we've gotten Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Volo's Guide to Monsters, and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes instead of PHB2, MM2, and MM3.

That's not to say there won't be another player-focused book of Stuff, but it would be similar to Xanathar's.
