I don't think the math works on a car as an investment at all.

I mean if you spent $70,000 on a collectable car in 1990 it would have to be worth almost $140,000 in 2020 just to have maintained value and that is before you figure in all the costs of owning an older car like the additional maintenance, the usually higher fuel bill, just the depreciation from daily driving a collectable (which if you aren't daily driving it you would have to buy a more modern daily driver anyway which kinda negates the whole argument Doug is making).

I guess you can vaguely argue that there is some money to save over buying a modern $70,000 vehicle, but then you have to make due without all the modern conveniences and safety factors that have evolved over the last 30 years. Plus because the plan is to drive it into the ground instead of reselling it you don't have to factor in value lost from inflation just the direct costs of ownership.

As someone living in Asia. Is hard to imagine something like a C43 and E46 M3 increasing in value versus something like a NSX and S2000. I think doug doesn’t understand collecters also live in Asia who reminisce something like a S14 Silvia versus a Terminator Cobra which is practically unknown here.

SUVs these days are for people who just want A car. They are about as likely to boost the prices of old SUVs as Toyota Camry owners are likely to boost the prices of E30

My dad owns a 1990 bmw e34 535i 5 speed manual. He's convinced it'll go up in value despite letting it sit outside uncovered. Pretty sad tbh

It was fairly easy to get in low on a used Cherokee and a used Grand Wagoneer and break even or make money after d/d'ing them. Definitely a thing for the aesthetic, size, and workhorse reliability. Isuzu also weirdly increasing in value.

99% of cars will not go up in value. Believe me I have owned many exotics. They take up space and still need maintenance even if not driven. It is like investing in land. Your much better off in the stock market. Liquid assets bought or sold at a click. In 20 years with conservative investing you will make money.

He forgot to discuss restomods. As price gouging continues from “restoration” shops for upgrades, completed cars will drastically go up in value but are dirt cheap now. Think about it, car builds made at 150k are market value about 50k today.

I'd say go with something that is popular when new and had a continued following over the years as used. Example: A great condition 1962 Studebaker Hawk GT with a 4 speed, air, and a 4 barrel carb is now about $31,000. This is a great driving very rare car. The 1962 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport with a 327 engine, 4 barrel carb, 4 speed and air is about $51,000, even though the Studebaker was a much rarer car, and I feel a better driving car. An exception I see is Japanese cars. A 4 Door Corolla is never going to be worth much as it gets old. I think that the specialty ones, particularly the sport ones that are actually fast, have a better chance of going up in value.
