  • Mulan is one of the most famous animated films made by Disney, who recently released a trailer for the live-action remake. So far, people’s reactions appear to be mixed, partially on the basis there won’t be any songs or talking dragons. A lot of you have asked, how is this trailer received in mainland China? We hit the streets of Beijing to find out.

The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.

Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Beijing, China. This video crew is provided by the Asian Art and Film Foundation. Please support their documentary project on Asian American Politicians ►

Mulan 2020 is okay action form Jet Li is amazing. But the first Disney Mulan is innacurate, and that the Mongols took over China and succeeded. And that representation even though the original Mulan legend is FICTION. I still don't like the representation of the Mongolians as bad guys, its war everyone is the bad guy. And they don't look like Mongolians, they just look like stereotypical asian bad guys. BUT THERE IS ALREADY A GOOD MULAN MOVIE FROM 2009 AND IT IS WAY BETTER. Plus im Mongolian.

I'm not even Asian, but I love Mulan. It's my favourite Disney film followed by the Little Mermaid and Tarzan. The new Mulan looks better than anything Disney has done.

I live in LA, and most movies are primarily about making money, so being factual is rarely the first priority. Instead, it’s to entertain a large amount of people, especially for Disney, and special effects and explosions seem to do it these days. It would be nice to see a real story told on occasion, similar to the great movies made in the 70’s.

I'm excited for the movie because it was my favourite as a child, but I agree with the girl who said the actress doesn't fit much the character. It would have been so cool if they found somebody who had a similar energy to the disney character, a little bit more clumsy and reckless, with a masculine look

VERY interesting! THANK YOU - I spent almost 2 weeks in Beijing several years ago drumming with families at a Burn Camp there. I really enjoyed talking to and getting to know the people there.....as a Black Man - I was quite a rare vision for many. I wish that I'd spoken the language.

it is really illuminating to me how much the little kids think about a subject and give some sort of outside perspective to a question like that, where as you take an american kid of that age and they would say "because they are not American" , hell you might get some adults that would answer like that. it might just be that one little girl but damn, half the adults i know would not spend as much time thinking about a question you asked or given it any real thought.

i always thought china's masses would not be as educated as the upper end of there socity, and im sure there are some idiots(every place has them) but this kid cant be more than 7or 11 years old, maybe the States were like this back in teh day and maybe china will see progression and pass us but it lead to its people becoing lazy and thoughtless like it has here but god, that was refreshing

I agree with the woman in white that she shouldn't look so obviously feminine given she has to go undercover as a male. She should also look physically stronger. I feel they just wanted someone skinny and stereotypically pretty to appeal to certain viewers.

As a Chinese person who grew up in Asia (Singapore, yes, not strictly in China), I've always felt like if DISNEY'S making a "remake" of Mulan, they might as well do DISNEY'S Mulan.
Chinese people know that the story of Mulan is a folk tale - there is a ballad, yes, but she is primarily a legendary hero not unlike King Arthur. We have lots of historical dramas and films made by Chinese people for a Chinese audience, taking care to portray a 'generally considered accurate' portrayal of the Chinese legend.

If Disney is doing a REMAKE, the story might as well be their version. I know this is not really a good example/concensus, but I have watched the Chinese dub of Disney's Mulan on Chinese streaming websites, and no one really seems to have a problem with their take at all. In fact they LIKE the animation. None of my Chinese friends have a problem with it either.
We know it's a Disney film - with songs and creative license and talking dragons. But we also know that it doesn't come from a place of malice, nor is it 'really inaccurate' because... it's kind of 'fantasy China'. It's like how I don't think a big population of Nordic people are raging at Marvel for their portrayal of Thor as a superhero, because it's kind of a different thing.

Like if Disney were going to REMAKE their take on King Arthur for example, I'd expect a remake of *Sword in the Stone* and not some realistic portrayal of 'historically accurate Arhurian legend' to... be culturally aware of English people?

I just... don't really see *who* Disney is aiming at with all this Mulan "remake" business. Clearly it's not REALLY aimed at China (a sweet $ide bonu$, maybe) but it really seems primarily aimed at Western markets with the PERCEPTION that Disney's "making a culturally accurate and woke Mulan!"... but at the end of the day kind of pleasing nobody?

I really like the little girl's answer. She was sure that Disney wouldn't be able to completely depicts chinese culture, since 'Mulan originates from China, and the process of thought' is different.

I know other respondents answer the same more or less, but the way she put it into words just made me think, "Wow. This girl is smart."

This is true of professions, hobbies, passions and places as well. It doesn't mean it cannot be entertaining whilest being respectful. Just enjoy it as an art form, flaws and all.

And that the spokesman come out and said we want to bring life to these cultures yet they're pocketing the money to turn around and build more s*** to make the world come to them like Disney World and Disneyland to profit more off of you wake up this is nothing more than a cash grab

Ppl who grew up with disney loved that version of Mulan for her character. Yeah it’s not historically accurate but that Mulan has the humor, the confidence, the flaws —all very human traits. Live action Mulan, in the trailers only, looks too cold for me. Plus there’s no Mushu, Cricket and the 3 soldiers for supporting roles, no Captain Shang for the drama/romance. Maybe we’ll get a “historically accurate” Mulan film but I really hope it wouldn’t come out too bland.

Btw I’m not Chinese but South east asian, so I guess Mulan is the closest rep I could relate to lol. And yes, it’s one of my favorite Disney childhood films that I grew up with.
