What are your thoughts on the best way to drive faster across the country?

Why dont you use a diesel? I mean there are a lot of high performance german diesel cars with a lot of more miles to the galon

I used to own a 2012 VW passat TDI turbo diesel with a stage 3.5 tune and ungoverned. Commuted near 1000 miles a week for about 4 years in Ohio. Car handled well at speed and still got 38mpg at 80 - 100 mph. Would have loved to try a cannonball in it

Probably not in the spirit of the race and would take a lot of money and clout. Contact railroads and let them know what you are doing, lease use of their tracks. Attach a set of those guide wheels for railroads to your car. Cross the country unmolested by police since you aren't on public roads.

What about putting in place a strategy to refuel while still driving? Like the KC-130J? I believe you can shave 20-30 minutes doing this.

Probably not the classiest or safest idea but the 1.6l turbo diesel in a Chevy Cruze will probably get you north of a buck by a slight bit and still pull really decent mileage. If the fuel filler accepts the semi truck filler it’ll be 90 seconds top top the tank....I think it’s rated at 47 mpg hwy so with a stock tank it’s probably 250 miles per fill or maybe more. Upsize the tank to 30 gallons and you’ll probably need to think about waste disposal issues between fills. This engine is based on a design from Opel and probably has the Autobahn in mind...just saying there’s a chance this could be a real sleeper.

I really think there should be a legal recognized "cannonball" race. I want to see exactly how fast someone can go sea to sea with no legal restrictions. I know that kinda kills some (most-all?) of the fun but why not?

1965, Harm (best friend, Harmon) and I, both 17 years old, June , sitting in his back yard talking./ Harm: what do you wanna do? Me: Ever see Manhattan? (we are in northern California.) His eye's lit up." Let's do it." (we had done impromptu drives before, just not this long.) My car, a 1962 pale yellow Cadillac series '62' convertible, new condition, bought for $350 because the guy couldn't get it to run...Towed to Harm's, found someone had mixed up spark plug wires, corrected, ran great, super tuned it, accuracy kit, water injection, glasspacs, HD shocks, new tires. The prior owner must have driven long distance, he'd added a 10 gallon tank in the trunk./ The rear shocks were air adjustable. We both had two weeks before starting summer jobs. Gas is 25-30 cents for premium, full tanks, head up Feather River Canyon on hwy 70 to 'What's New Pussycat?' at high speed./ across Nevada (no speed limit) at 125 mph max speed, saw few cars, kept at 90-125 across most of the country. In those days there were far fewer cars, most were full sized, fewer radar units, no cell phones, and if there was no other car near as point of reference we just looked to be a beautiful '62 Cad cruising across the country. No near accidents, no fuss, no cop stops. Time into Manhattan, 39:14, with gas and actual food stops. We wondered around awhile, then left, coming back we took the southern route and stopped to see things including the Grand Canyon, back in 5 days. There were many many cross country trips, my 1963 Electra with pumped 425 cu in , HD suspension bought at 18 years old, loved ever since, is MUCH faster than the Cad (nice cruise speed 150-160 mph), now has 458,000 miles, still looks/.runs as if new. Personal records, two aboard, 30:28, solo 36:40 northern California to Jacksonville, Florida. I could stay awake then. Love the channel, Ed's super cool.

Maybe not the best car, but Volvo has this little thing called Nivomat. Same idea as the ABC in the Mercedes. Levels the back of the car so you could put a lot of fuel in the back.

Ya know, you wouldn't even need anything crazy like a Predator. You could probably just find some private pilots who own decently quick airplanes (anything faster than a 172 should be fine) and do a relay kind of thing with them. They'd have to be volunteers, since there's all kinds of legal issues with paying for flights, but that's not a huge deal since there's tons of guys out there who need the hours anyway and who'd probably jump on the opportunity to get them on a cool mission like this instead of just buzzing around aimlessly.

Granted you wont get the potential top speed with an AMG type car, but you would cut fuel stops from 3 to 1
