  • Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30 100% synthetic motor oil competes against Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil in the oil championship finale. Other brands already tested in the oil playoffs include: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amazon Basics, Quaker State, Lucas, Super Tech, Liqui Moly, Red Line, Kendall, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Penrite and Schaeffer's, all 5W-30 synthetic motor oils.

Regarding the independent lab oil analysis reports, I had the all the oils tested by an oil testing lab. I'm not sponsored by the testing lab and I paid the normal bulk testing rate. You can view the oil analysis reports for free at https://www.patreon.com/posts/27168208

    Oil Series Video Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjT3B9r2z3fXlvbP3tb9e056Q8O5krrCW

I purchased all of the oils tested in this video and am not sponsored by any of the brands tested, nor do I sell any of the products tested. The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. @Steve some oil companies are give speacial discounts or deal to store owners to not displaying other brands. Papsi and Coke does samething too. For example for our restaurant Papsi give us 4 free display refrigerator, and did all of our banners, and give free drink glasses in exchange for not having any coke products.

@John Q per Odyclub members, Honda DW1 is ok to use, but Ody's tranny tent to be rough on the Oil. Some people had to change to Penzoil or Amsoil. I'm with you on the DW1 as prefer by Honda .... I had a 92 Prelude that DW1 was the key to get the tranny to work the way that it was designed to...but on the Ody I rather go with Amsoil :)

The classification of oils has not been mentioned at all.
Most are unaware that most synthetics are group 3 which is nothing more than slightly altered dinosaur oil which can legally carry a "synthetic" classification.
Group 4 or PAO oil is the real deal and significantly more expensive but nobody will actually fess up tell you what their oil really is.
Makes me wonder about the two leading oils in this test.

This sort of detail and analysis in general is simply not done anywhere else.
Everyone boasts the best oil but no one can ever prove it, until now!

Don't see this covered, sorry if it was already. On the evaporation test, it's not the total amount lost but the percent. Because they are not starting with the same amount, 404g (Penn) vs 430g (Ams). Doing a rough calculation based on the number you mentioned both lost aprox 1.8% to evaporation. Unless my math is off. Thanks for these btw.

Hi Project Farm, really appreciate what you do. However I think using the Pennzoil platinum ultra is not the best pick. That particular oil is not available over the counter in most stores and has to special order. I think the best pick would have been the Pennzoil ultra (without the "Platinum"). I believe those results would be different from the very first rounds with that oil. Thank you and keep rocking!!!

Hey, I was wondering if you can do an oil comparison with motorcycle oil? Possibly finding a way to test wet clutch application, heat buildup, wear and grip? Oils i'd like to see in a 10w40 grade is Motul 5100, 7100, 300v, Redline 10w40 motorcycle, Liqui moly 10w40 street & offroad, yamalube and any others would be great. I have a yamaha yxz1000r and looking for the best oil for my transmission which has spur gears and wet clutch. It came with yamalube, I switched to motul 5100, it ran slightly quieter and shifted slightly better, enough to notice a difference. So I would like to try a full synthetic 10w40 next time. Thanks if its possible.

MOTOR OIL TEST IDEA: Compare "same" oil with different viscosity, say Mobil1 5W-30 and Mobil 10W-30. Or Valvoline 5W-30 with the same 10W-30. On my '96 LT1 5.7 engine the oil cap says 5W-30 but the manual says you can use 10W-30 if staying above -10 Celsius. Note that my engine consumes almost no oil. There has to be an upside in using an oil with the tighter range of the 10W-30 in warm climates (perhaps more stable in the long run or in extreme conditions?) otherwise why not always use 5W-30 whether in Alaska or S. Florida.

PF great videos and loving your channel. I have a video request!

Can you compare shell rotella and amsoil diesel engine oils? I have used rotella in several international 7.3 engines with great results. I am hooked on amsoil as I use that in my other vehicles. From daily driver to track use amsoil is great in my experience. Im building a cummins 5.9 and want to see if giving up shell rotella is worth the switch to amsoil for a trucks diesel engine.

Keep up the great work; your approach and testing is awesome.
