The best part was when Christopher Guest hits the boom microphone with his head.
From back in the days when SNL had writers that actually wrote comedy. Back when SNL was trying to be funny and more than just a political platform for the extreme left.
After I first saw this, I couldn't keep a straight face even looking at Sajak. Pretty decent guy.
I can hardly believe Pat Sajak and Vanna White are still doing WHEEL OF FORTUNE!
People would tell me I reminded them of Grimley!
so sweet!
See? Now this was a good SNL skit. This is the SNL I remember and love. Just funny, quirky comedy. Nothing political about it. No disgusting subversive social commentary. No thoroughly unfunny relentless leftist bullshit/propaganda like the current scumbag incarnation of SNL. 👌🏻
I videotaped this episode (on Beta!) and watched this skit many, many times. Ed Grimley even made my parents laugh, which was nice since we didn't agree on much in those days.
AWESOME
guy in elevator - John Candy
... ever that has been?
This season (1984-85) was by far the best. Too bad most most of the cast members left at the end of the year
Lorne Michaels returned the next season to replace Dick Ebersol after 5 years producing Saturday Night Live and the show was completely revamped, which ended up being one of the worst seasons in SNL History.
This world needs more Ed Grimleys.
He was best when he played his triangle while running around his room.
Martin, Robin and Jerry are the best!!!
SNL loves it when new cast members would be on the show and come with baggage already, ready to work with.such people as billy crystal and seen here martin short
classic
😆😆😆 I need some Ed Grimley pants
Okay so like...I'm autistic, and honestly, I relate to Ed Grimley so much. I mean, his passion is Wheel of Fortune and mine is music production and vocal synthesis, but GOD he mirrors my internal monologue really well whenever I get to do any sort of work with someone I admire. I get overcome by this like...manic energy, my mind races through all the possibilities in the future, I fantasize about things like befriending my inspirations, working on long-term collaborations...
I'm not gonna lie, autistic characters played for laughs tend to suck REALLY bad (see: Sheldon Cooper), but Ed...doesn't? Like yes, he's an overeager socially awkward obsessive nerd, but...you can't help but relate to him. He's just so clearly a well-meaning guy who's passionate about Wheel of Fortune and makes the effort to get to where he is. I'm almost entirely certain that many Jeopardy contestants are a similar type.
Also, the awkward body motions. God, that is TOTALLY a thing. I've been in this very excitable state myself and then had to go "oh crap, what the hell are my arms doing?"
And that elevator bit, OOF. Yeah, we autistics call that an "infodump". I've...done that more times than I'd like to admit. And...this comment is four paragraphs long already so CASE IN POINT...
SPIN! SPIN WHEEL SPIN!!!!!
I miss Ed Grimley, I must say
christopher guest, julia loise-dreyfus and martin short in one sketch
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Ed Grimly is the best character ever on SNL for me .
what a treasure martin short is! gotta love ed grimley,,,,i must say!
Brilliant
Filthy Frank is kicking in at 2:32
I went to a country Halloween party as Ed Grimley, and everyone freaked. They didn’t know I was ‘in character’ !
I MUST SAY!
Chris Guest barely holding it together. Also, SNL never knew what to do with Julia Louis Dreyfus. That said, and most importantly, high ceilings truly can be effective.
So the cartoons were based on this TV series?! 🤔
yup
Nigel Tufnel looks different here.

This was THE funniest thing when I saw this as a 14 year old
I think SNL wishes they had talent like this again
Is that Christopher Guest?
I don't know why but this just made me feel sad. It's a weird feeling being suicidal and seeing someone who finds happiness in the dumbest shit....you feel sorry for them in a way. It didn't really make me laugh. I'm trying to get into more Martin Short stuff because Bill Hader idolizes him, this didn't do it for me though :/
This sketch wouldn't be made at all today. It was a different time for comedy back in the mid-80s.
why are People laughing ???
Hiliarous Martin short is funny😊
Who is Mental Marvin then?
This was the very first SNL skit I ever saw - came out in the fall of 1984, the same year I was born...
I believe this was also the Thanksgiving episode
Good 'ol mental Edward.
Want to see Jackie Rogers Jr. on 'Name that Tune'.
Am I the only one who thought that it was Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in the thumbnail
That was pretty decent I must say!
This is a heartwarming sketch...I love it! There are mixed emotions, I laughed and feeling concerned at the same time...glad the dude changed his mind on his "way down". I love how old casts didn't rely on cue cards too much like the recent ones. And I love Martin Short character's sincerity. 👍😊❤
The quality of SNL has plummeted as well as the comedic talents.
Ed Grimley reminds me of Mr. Rogers with his huge grin.
Is that Donald Trump in the elevator?!
This was great I must say!
Grown Up Alfalfa?
