  • I am not sponsored by Amazon, Mobil 1, or Valvoline. I bought all the products for this test using my own money. Dozens of viewers requested this video. I'm not part of the Amazon Affiliate Program either, since I'm not trying to sell products. I do independent testing only. So, thank you very much for the video ideas, including this one! AmazonBasics Fully Synthetic Motor Oil better than Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil? In this video, I tested Valvoline 10W-30 Conventional Motor Oil, AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor OIl, and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Motor oil for cold temperature flow, lubricity, evaporative loss after exposure to approximately 400F for 2 hours, and cold flow of each oil after exposed to heat for 2 hours. Finally, while I don't have a shop full of expensive oil testing equipment, the testing approach I use helps provide good information on the quality of these oil products. Thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support. https://www.patreon.com/projectfarm

DISCLAIMER: The testing methods outlined in this video are my own not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. This is a showdown between AmazonBasics full synthetic motor oil and Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil. The VALVOLINE motor oil used in this experiment is CONVENTIONAL motor oil, NOT SYNTHETIC. The use of the Valvoline conventional motor oil is to illustrate the benefits of that synthetic engine oil has over conventional motor oil. Why buy a conventional motor oil when you can purchase a synthetic motor oil which will outperform conventional oil for around the same price or a little more? The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application.

Well done,... I'm a retired CLS/STLE trained by Mobil Oil and worked for an independent Mobil dist in the upper midwest. We know cold.
I like the fact you included the conventional oil and the fact you ran the cold flow for both fresh and oxidized oil. Most people don't understand coming into winter is a very important time to change the engine oil,. especially if the vehicle sits out. The visual of the oxidized oil hopefully registers with your viewers that synthetics are great for cold weather operation.
Visuals are the best learning / teaching tools..... I know,... I did training sessions for lubricant clients, jobbers, and our customer service staff.
Everyone is from Missouri,... the Show Me state. I wished Youtube was around when I was still working. Very nice video.

Would you be able to test different brands of drill bits...drilling into different types of materials....like steel, aluminum, stainless steel, wood ect?

Would be interested to see drill bits from big box stores and professional grade....to see durability results and cutting speed vs effort...
Thanks for the videos you make and post

Here is why the amazon oil possibly flowed better after the freezing:

It was not as close to the direct cooling mechanism/air flow from the freezer, or because the direct cooling came from the sides (can't see the left side), making the valvoline and mobile 1 colder and possibly blocking some cold air from it.

At 8:33, you can see the frost is building up on the right side toward the mobile one oil. Small freezers don't have much PSI to push the cold air throughout the freezer, as I've noticed personally some freeze MUCH more and "freezer burn" what is closer to the cold air output.

I think if you eliminate this variable, your experiment would boost its merit greatly.

But then, I'm not great at thermodynamics. Is it possible for a smaller freezer to create equal temperature throughout the entire volume, include its contents, completely? How long would that take, if even possible?

It is not always best to have a low viscosity. Higher viscosity tends to have higher load carrying capacity and harder to squeezed out under the pressure. It is silly just compare the viscosity. You can use acetone or methanol at -15 F degree and it will flow faster than Amazon basic and Mobil 1... Tribological performance is not a simple matter of comparing the viscosity....

Been using on my trucks a TRIAX Fleet Supreme 5W-40 i get from Amazon. Id be curious to see the tests on this, especially the friction tests. Using it on 3 x F250 and 1 x F350 Powerstroke. Manufacturer says it has huge Boron and Moly, unique adpack content which is supposed to help with wear and general engine operation. My experience with it has been phenomenal and the amazon reviews are in line with what im experiencing. Way faster turbo spooling, quiet engines and getting about 1-3 mpg better fuel econ, my average drain is about 12,000 miles with Polaris lab analysis. Wanted to see how this performs in your tests. Here is the oil. https://www.amazon.com/Triax-Supreme-5W-40-Ultimate-Synthetic/dp/B07P8JCTB2

well my 2008 Subaru Impreza OBS has been living on Mobil 1 high mileage pretty much since day one at 12 miles on the odometer. started using 10W-30 as it crossed over 200k per Dr. Subaru in my area. the car has the original engine and head gasket. a new timing belt was installed by Dr. Subaru at 193,000 miles. I can't complain about Mobil 1. I change the oil every 6 months or so and at 5 to 6k miles. the 12-year-old car runs like new with plenty of power and doesn't burn much if any oil...

I would also LOVE to see the bearing wear test (at both room temperature AND operating temperature) comparing Mobil1 5w30 and Mobil 1 0w40. The idea is to the test the common claim that the additional ZDDP in the 0w40 will reduce wear on flat tappet cam/rocker engines. There is allegedly a common issue with modern low ZDDP oils and cam wear in older Hot Rods.
