Is Amazon Basics better than Liqui Moly? Let's find out!

  • Published: 08 April 2019
  • The oil competition series intensifies as Amazon Basics competes against Liqui Moly. Is the low-priced AmazonBasics full synthetic 5W-30 motor as good or better than Liqui Moly's Top Tex 4200 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? I am not sponsored by Liqui Moly or Amazon Basics. I purchased both of these products using my own money. I am not sponsored by Amazon, Liqui Moly, or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video!

In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple and will advance to next round in the oil championship series.

Red Line won over Walmart's SuperTech and will also advance:

The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support.

Fck that, i dont trust this test. Why the fck would be a cheap oil better then a high qualitiy one. I am using only high performance oil and i drive a bmw 335i n54 with over 540 hp. I will never put a cheap oil into my engine! You can say wathever you want, put cheap oil in your car but dont complain if your engine will blow off.

Für diesen Test hättest du das Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 5W-30 müssen. Noch besser währe ein Liqui Moly der Synthoilklasse!

take: Liqui moly is the most overrated and overpriced oil, it's absolutely nothing special but it suckers in the german car fanboys with it's big MADE IN GERMANY labels. there are many oils available that are better AND cheaper, and many more that are just as good for less.

Project Farm I figured it’d be a good oil to test since liqui moly claims it significantly reduces engine friction by 15% and has more additives

          Isn't Liqui moly 5w30 4200 is a bmw ll01 oil? Meaning it's closer to a api 5w-40 with a 3.5+ hths? Amazon basics probably has a hths of 2.9?

Your doesn’t tell anything. I will buy liqui moly over Amazon Oil. Nothing in your test show scientific proofs. Where is the combustion in your test...? Where is the particles in the engine? Where is the burnt carbon? Where is the seals? Where are the bearings where is the load forces in metals with higher temps...? Just in case you always take foreign brands to find the losers

                    1. It-s LIQUI, not LiquiD moly
                    2. Liqui moly has synthetis tehnology so not fully synthetic.
The Synthoil range from liqui moly are the synthetics.

Liqui Moly also lost the evaporative test as it lost 0.609% versus Amazon Basics 0.604% loss (based on your before and after weights).

You may want to consider using percent loss as your starting weights differed on both the lubricity and evaporative tests.

You have already done an incredible amount of work for these tests.
Next step.... would be a wear test after cooking the oil.
I think that would be more relevant than doing the test with brand new oils.
Nevertheless, thank you very much for the hard work!

NOT A FAIR TEST!Obviously this is their diesel
Oil but because of their additives also can be used on SOME gas vehicles. Very obvious when you don’t even see an approval
Rating for Gas engine Mercedes,229.3,229.5,and most of the ratings on the label
Are for Diesel engines. So this was no way a fair test.Seems so many people are out to push red line and amsoil.2 companies that give away their products for free to people to push them. Not saying your doing this but I can run E85 and 93 octane in my car. Would that be a fair test to see Wich will clean my valves better? Why don’t you use their Gas only oil, rated only for gas engines and to make it fair how about newgen their latest oil or even go back to the older oils like high Tec. By the way redline and amsoil buy their oils from BP Shell and Mobile whoever’s barrel
Is cheaper that day, already refined. People actually think redline and amsoil Have refineries and wells digging in the gulf for only the best crude,ha ha. And they take that oil they buy in barrels and simply add their additives tryng to out add the other. That’s why their oils cost double mobile 1 liqui moly Castrol etc. It’s all a oil company racket that other people get paid to push.Change your oil at 3-5k instead of the crazy 10-15k and neither of these oils or pretty much any decent oil even non synthetic will outperform the other. If your dumb enough to wait 15k your car will never see 200k,the additives in the SUPERMAN amsoil and BATMAN redline and all the oils might help some, but can’t save you from sludge blown headgaskets valve issues and timing chain breaks, all issues attributed to lazy cheap ass people who don’t wana spend $30 every few k to change the blood in their car. Now go buy some liquigen moly and do this test again!By the way the amazon oil won the ruler test but when your engine is HOTT you want the THICKER OIL!!So you don’t blow a rod or bearing!Thats the point of liqui moly to protect your motor when your driving it. What do you do more start your car in the cold to warm it up for 5 minutes or DRIVE IT while the oil is COOKING!?Ill take the thick protection during actually using the the car driving it on highway high rpm city driving stop and go over a quick half second start In 15 degrees. I mean liquid moly actually won the better oil test truth be told. It lost the cold start BUT BIG BUT,being it was thicker that means it also stuck to the pistons rods lifter all the crucial parts better DEFINITELY MOST LIKELY. So did it really win the cold start test??The Amazon oil over night left a less protective coating due to it being lighter. Who cares if this oil or that is The thinnest at cold start I want the oil that will have little bit left over on the engine parts for when I start it In below zero weather. You think that oil in the pan is gonna help you immediately? It was still thick barely thinner then moly. What protects you is the oil film left over from when you parked it overnight from the thicker oil. I don’t care how thin the oil was,if it left no film your engine will instantly sound like a diesel knock knock-who’s there-Rod-Rod who-ROD KNOCK!
                        Ha ha ha

I am going to tell you a secret about liqui moly toptec category.
I have been using it in my BMWs.
I tested Castrol, Motul, Mebanol, BMW Oil, Shell Helix...
Liqui Moly oil needs at least 500 kms before its formula takes a stable shape that would lubricate the engine as optimally as possible without loosing protection and viscocity chracteristics.
You should run these oils in the same car for at least 500 kms, then grab a portion of each and re-do your tests. You will be suprised.
Besides, LM toptec 4200 is BMW LL04 compliant (fuel without sulfur), while Amazon basics is BMW LL01 (fuel with sulfur).
You can retry the test with LM special tec 5w30 if you r in USA.
