Last episode we explored the strategy of Jeopardy Champion James Holzhauer and how even host Alex Trebek couldn't believe his winning streak. Today, we are going to dive into WHY this record setting player finally lost. I have a theory that it might not be as simple as James having a bad day. I'm not saying the powers that be behind Jeopardy did ANYTHING wrong, but you never know what really happens behind the curtain - or in this case, the blue screen.

Maybe.... it cost 1.5m a week to make the show, and so 200k /wk is significant but not that big a deal. They make 25m a year on slot machine sales ffs.

Really the entire analysis is useless because you don't give figures on how much Jeopardy makes.
On the other hand the analysis of the games was awesome. Easiest game in history?! Pretty good evidence.

In the "All Time" championship that just ran on NBC Ken Jennings won a best of 3 set in 4 games while James did not win a single round. It seems that James's techniques don't work when used against skilled players. Two things I noticed; Ken risked more than usuall years ago on daily doubles, even using James's poker 'all in' jesture. In several games James seemed to give up after loosing a double jeopardy that made it unlikely for him to win. In the second game of the fourth round he was far behind and seemed to just be watching the game.

There are at least two obvious problems with this analysis. First of all, it is not so clear cut that producers would want to get rid of a contestant who was winning big. While it's true that there is no way to charge advertisers for the current level of viewership it should be fairly obvious that a higher average viewership in a given season would translate into more advertising dollars the following season. So whatever they might have lost that season could easily have been made up over subsequent seasons due to the higher average viewership numbers being used to calculate rates the following seasons.

Secondly, there is a very basic problem with the Coryat score and how it is used in this analysis. It might be a useful statistical measure to identify trends over the course of a season or many many episodes, but it would be very unreliable at measuring difficulty of clues on any given episode. As MatPat acknowledges, determining the difficulty of the clues is highly subjective. It's entirely possible that the particular set of clues on that particular episode just happened to be ones that that particular set of contestants happened to know very well. Maybe all the contestants just happened to get a really good night's sleep, eat right and felt really good coming into the set on that particular day. There's all kinds of very plausible reasons why you might see a spike in the coryat score on one particular episode. Jeapordy producers rigging the game seems less plausible than many of these other possible explanations given that the risk doesn't really justify the reward (we risked the the long term income of the show to save a few bucks over a few coming episodes - and probably lost advertising revenue in subsequent seasons because the viewership numbers tanked after James lost).

Notice that MatPat doesn't even offer us any statistical measure of how likely or unlikely that particular Coryat score was in relation to all the previous coryat scores. Was it 1 in 10, 1 in 100, 1 in a million? Given that the score depends as much on the strength of the contestants as it does on the difficulty of the clues, it's significantly more likely that record high coryat scores would be seen during the run of a particularly strong contestant. And it's even more likely that he would lose to a particularly strong rival. Emma Boettcher didn't just defeat him, she also went on to place in the top three in the Tournament of Champions. So is it really all that surprising that the combined coryat score was so high on that particular day? It doesn't seem to be at all.

                              Jon Parnell  4 days back

The Coryat score seems to say equally much about the contestant's ability as it does about the difficult of the questions. An alternative conclusion you could draw from looking at Coryat scores is that his competitors were stronger than previous competitors.

The thing I didn't hear you mention, game shows don't pay out one lump sum in cash. The winner is usually paid from a trust fund, with an annual withdrawal maximum or the total divided by 20 years. This way they get to keep the money and pay about 5% per year to the contestant which means the contestant is collecting the interest and never touches the principle which the game show keeps.

Watching this now made me laugh because James also lost the GOAT tournament to Ken with a Shakespeare final jeopardy question with Ken betting $0 likely because he wanted to go one more episode for a smack down tie breaker at 2-2.

One thing about ads because while james was on his run the ad prices got higher for the ads in several months so Jeopardy did make money off of ads

Suspicious, yes, but any reigning champion will lose eventually. These could just be the naturally occurring statistics that did them in. It's just seeing a conspiracy in an undefeated team losing to an underdog. Then again, it could be...

@Xavier Alexander As an aside, there WAS a crude lockout system in place 13 weeks into Season 1: you had to keep the button held down for a fraction of a second in order to complete the current necessary for ringing in. If you kept the button held down when the reset switch was flipped, or if you jiggled the button, you couldn't ring in.

The guy is really good at Jeopardy, but his style doesn't work as well for easier questions so he loses on the easiest game. Like duh. Conversely, James is unusually good at Jeopardy and his opponent in the game where he loses is probably around his skill level. That means the difficulty score would show it to be less difficult because there are two unusually good players.

If you take the same board and give it to three good players and three bad players, the good players will have a much higher score than the bad ones even though the questions are the same.

The Coryat score was higher than average during James' run because he is extremely smart, and he was making it higher by answering so many questions correctly. It's not suspicious for there to be a record-breakingly high Coryat score during James' run - he's a record-breakingly good player. It was extremely high during the final game because both he and Emma were in the game - two of the three players were insanely good, obviously the total Coryat score was going to be high.
